Verenize Arceo: Atwater High safe without fence

On Dec. 14, our nation suffered a huge tragedy in Connecticut. Adam Lanza shot 20 innocent children at their elementary school. Since this horrific event, many people have been questioning the safety of schools here in Merced County.

I am a junior at Atwater High School and I can honestly say that I feel safe. I also feel that the city of Atwater and those around it have a strong sense of community. Many people would say to make AHS a safer environment we would need to add some sort of fence or add more security, but the lack of fence is not the problem and I do not want to go to a school where it feels like a prison.

The problem in the school shootings is the lack of communication among those who need it most. If we can just go that extra mile and reach out to those in need of it, who knows what we can prevent.
