MERCED -- A 27-year-old Merced man was arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with a shooting on West 26th and Canal streets on Sunday, police reported.
Officers said the victim was physically assaulted and as he fled, someone shot at him.
Police identified the suspect who fired at the victim as Pete Valenzuela, who officers said is a documented member of a Northern street gang.
With the help of the Narcotic Task Force, Gang Violence Suppression Unit, and the Merced Police SWAT team, Valenzuela was located at the 3200 block of Shaffer Road on Thursday.
After a short foot pursuit, he was arrested and booked for the attempted homicide and for outstanding arrest warrants.
Officers said no one was injured in the apprehension of Valenzuela.
He is being held at the Merced County jail with no bail.
