Life through the lens: Marci Stenberg 1946-2012

Photographer Marc Riboud was once quoted as saying, "Taking pictures is savoring life intensely, every hundredth of a second."

Merced Sun-Star photographer Marci Stenberg relished every moment of her career, and her excitement for the art was truly indicative of her work.

On this page is a collection of photographs by Stenberg, who died Dec. 21 at her Merced home. She was 66 years old.

Many of her works are fun and whimsical, such as a photograph of a bear at the Applegate Zoo, who is apparently curious about her camera lens. Others are elegant and mystical, such as the photo of autumn foliage at Yosemite National Park.

Stenberg also was known as an experienced crime and fire photojournalist. Many of her photographs were taken within minutes after law enforcement arrived at the scene. Her photos often captured crucial moments of life and death.

She worked at the Sun-Star for 24 years, garnering a reputation among area residents as the eyes of Merced County, telling the region's story through her photographs.

A memorial service for Stenberg is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. today at Gateway Community Church, 353 E. Donna Drive, Merced.
