Peter Lizdas: Cartoonist didn't mean that

Lisa Benson's snarky cartoon of Dec. 21, portraying Barack Obama as "President Santa Claus," is a fine bit of unintentional irony given the failure of the Republican caucus in the House of Representatives to pass Speaker John Boehner's "Plan B" because too many Republican representatives could simply not bear the thought that even the wealthiest among us, those earning a million dollars and more a year, would have to pay top-margin income taxes at the rate which prevailed prior to the enactment of the tax cuts under George W. Bush (the "disappeared president," in case you don't remember him).

Those representatives were jonesin' to bestow a big Christmas goody on millionaires (at everyone else's expense), but now are unable to do so. What a shame.

But Obama and the Democrats have a really big gift waiting for the Republicans, to be presented in January: the opportunity to vote on for a bill lowering income taxes for 98 percent of the American people.

The Republicans should be thrilled by this chance to support a historical lowering of taxes for the vast majority of Americans.
