Teenager injured in Atwater shooting

Sun-Star staff

ATWATER -- A 16-year-old juvenile was injured during a shooting Thursday night in the 100 block of Juniper Avenue.

Police responded to the scene at 11:15 p.m. after receiving calls about shots fired, according to Lt. Sam Joseph.

After arriving, they found the juvenile and 19-year-old Seferino Olvera hiding in a bush. The juvenile had two gunshot wounds.

Witnesses told police a green or dark colored Honda or Acura drove by, and one of the car's occupants shot at the pair.

Olvera and the juvenile, however, gave generally conflicting statements to police, but claimed someone in a hooded sweat shirt had approached them, asked what gang they were from and fired.

Police also found Olvera in possession of a handgun.

The juvenile was taken to the hospital for his gunshot wounds, while Olvera was booked at the Merced County Jail on suspicion of illegal gun possession.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Detective David Brum at (209) 357-6396. Tips are kept confidential and callers can remain anonymous.
