Merced man arrested after foot pursuit

MERCED -- Merced police arrested a man after a routine stop because of the vehicle's tinted windows turned into a foot pursuit Monday morning, Sgt. Alan Ward reported.

A police officer attempted to pull over the man, driving a 2003 Honda Civic, at 9:26 a.m. on Willow and Barney streets.

The man, identified as 28-year-old Mark Jurado, stopped his car on Barney Street, then jumped out and began running.

Ward said Jurado jumped the fences of several homes and ran through their back yards as he tried to escape. He eluded police for about two minutes but was captured about a block away on the railroad tracks near Santa Fe Avenue.

According to Ward, Jurado was wanted on a felony warrant related to narcotics charges. He was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and on the narcotics warrant, Ward said.

Jurado is being held at the Merced County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
