New bistro to open in Bob Hart Square

- jsmith@mercedsunstar.com

MERCED -- In the latest sign of downtown Merced's steady revival, a new American bistro will have its grand opening this Friday.

The Five Ten Bistro and After 5 Bar and Lounge have moved into 510 West Main St., formerly Fernando’s Bistro.

The new restaurant and bar will cater to the area's business class and working professionals, said co-owner Robert Matsuo. "It's chef-style quality food without the chef-style prices.”

Matsuo said he and his business partners, who have all worked in the hospitality industry but none of whom have ever owned a restaurant, are both nervous and excited.

“Everyone said, 'why Merced'” he said. “We want to give back to our community. We live in this community. We want to keep our money in town. We decided to take our gamble and keep it local.”

There will be more on downtown Merced's economic development in tomorrow's Sun-Star.
