Nathan Sweem: Monopolizing the power of the gun

A gun is a tool. In the hands of a criminal, it can be used to commit crime. In the hands of a law-abiding person, it can be used to discourage or even stop crime. A government that calls for gun control or gun bans desires to have a monopoly on the power of the gun, when this power should be available to everyone. Power has as much potential for good as it does for evil. The decision of how power is used always comes down to the choice of the individual. The power of the gun is essentially no different than any other. Our state government already enjoys a coercive monopoly on certain types of guns, which, in the hands of law- abiding people, present no threat to public safety. The very act of using force to outlaw the possession of certain guns by certain people shows our government's true nature: they are tyrants who exercise unnecessary force against people who have committed no crime. It's past time we stood up to them.
