Man on life support after pickup rolls over in Merced

MERCED -- A 24-year-old man is in serious condition after a rollover in the 300 block of Grogan Avenue about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Merced police reported Sunday.

Officers said the motorist was driving at high speed westbound on Grogan west of Macready Drive when he lost control of his 1998 Toyota Tundra pickup and veered off the road.

Police said the pickup hit a streetlight, sheering it off at the base. The truck continued west, traveling about 100 feet into a vacant lot and hitting a small tree. Officers said the truck tore the tree in half.

After continuing 100 feet, the truck rolled several times, and the driver was thrown from the vehicle, police reported.

Police said it is unclear if alcohol was a factor.

The driver, who was unconscious when officers arrived, suffered major injuries in the crash. He is on life support at a Modesto-area hospital. His identify wasn't available.
