TURLOCK -- Golden Valley High junior Enkhmandakh Delgermurun must have impressed his assistant coach Jake Chastain.
Seconds after the compact-sized Cougar finished his post-match handshakes Saturday, Chastain leaned close to Delgermurun's ear and said, "That was your best match this season."
Delgermurun yielded a quick smile. It was a good day's work.
All he did was roll through the 120-pound class Saturday at Pitman's ninth Rumble in the Jungle. Delgermurun swept through all three bouts, including a third-round pin over Jordan Canseco of Patterson for the title.
"I have goals," Delgermurun said later. "Win a varsity tournament, go to (Sac-Joaquin Section) Masters and State."
Check No. 1 off the list.
Delgermurun and fellow teammate and weight-class champion Aaron Ramirez (126) escorted Golden Valley to the points title in the 27-team field. The Cougars totaled 236½ points, far ahead of runner-up Escalon at 171.
Part of that margin was provided by Delgermurun (26-6), who transferred from Buhach Colony to GV midway through wrestling season as a sophomore.
"I still feel like I haven't caught up," he said.
He's gaining fast. He led Canseco 10-0 before the referee slammed his hand on the mat to end it. Delgermurun, normally a 120-pounder, cut weight and took the place of Christian Vasquez, who took his SAT exam Saturday.
Ramirez (24-9), a senior, worked hard for one-point wins in his first two matches before he toppled Patterson sophomore Daniel Cota 9-3 in the 126 final.
Golden Valley collected its second first-place team trophy -- the first was at Modesto Junior College. The Cougars, 21-1 in duals, are 3-0 in the Central California Conference going into their final two matches Tuesday vs. Turlock and Wednesday vs. Merced.
Only the CCC champion advances to the Section Team Duals on Saturday at Stockton's Lincoln High.
"It's rough in Division 1," Golden Valley coach Chopper Mello said. "We have eight leagues and no runner-ups get in (to the Team Duals).
Atwater rode bracket champions Kyle Thorpe (160) and Jojo Ochoa (195) to an eighth-place finish. Ochoa edged Antonio Mello 7-5 in the title match. Thorpe (34-3), ranked sixth in the section in his division, overpowered Hughson's Joseph Dias in an 18-3 technical fall in his final.
