Rep. John Garamendi, D-Fairfield, this afternoon will inspect heavy fire damage sustained earlier this month to a large building at Beale Air Force Base near Marysville.
An estimated $10 million in damage was caused to the 38,000-square-foot Civil Engineering Squadron Building, when fire swept through the structure Jan. 21. Because it was the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the building was largely empty of personnel, limiting the chance of fire injury.
One person was in the building at the time of the fire's beginning. That person safely got out.
Garamendi and staff from the offices of Barbara Boxer, D-California, and Dianne Feinstein, D-California, will get a look at the damage. They will also meet with Col. Douglas Lee, the 9th Reconnaissance Wing Vice Commander.
Garamendi's office said in a press release that the congressman is working with the Pentagon to determine the best avenue for securing rebuilding funds.
