Tomorrow is the last day to fill out an application to nominate a local bowler for the Merced County Bowling Hall of Fame.
The Hall honors those county association bowlers who have contributed to the growth and welfare of the sport. The qualifications and applications are available at Bellevue Bowl Fun and Entertainment Center.
There are three categories to be recognized in the Hall. The annual HOF dinner will be held on Saturday, Apr. 13 at the Atwater Community Center in Atwater.
Around the lanes
How about Otto Aschbacher picking up two baby splits (6-10) last week ... not bad for being 94 years old. Manuel Salazar is back bowling after some medical problems with a 231 ... they both roll in the Bellevue Seniors.
I was talking to Pastor John Flanagan, a member of the Merced County HOF the other day. He told me that he is coming back to bowling after a lay-off of over a year. He will have his wife, Jonathan and Nathan, both of whom are shooters on his team.
Senior singles
A large group of senior were on hand for the association annual Senior Singles at Bellevue a week ago. A total of 42 were rolling the two divisions according to their age.
In the older age (65 and up) it was Larry Valenti Sr. taking first with a 703 series with handicap and a check for $64. Runner-up was Tom Brewer with a 701 for $50, and in third place was Sylvia Giordano for $38.
In the younger division (50 to 64) it was Newman's Phyllis Wallbaum edging out Keith Hunter Jr. 732 to 731 and winning $71 (Hunter won $61). Third place had Barry Kutz (730) for $55, fourth was Charlie McMillian (725) for $47, and in the final spot was Richard Tweed with (716) for $40. This makes three wins in the senior singles for Valenti Sr.
McHenry Bowl's
senior no-tap
A few locals made a couple of bucks last Friday at McHenry Bowl's monthly senior no-tap tourney. Atwater's Jim Mullins finished in third place in the men's overall standing with an 871 series for $45. He also cashed in the high game side pot with a 278.
Mary Hamilton from Dos Palos placed in the women's division high game pot. Yours truly placed in the high game pot with a 278. The next senior no-tap will be a man and woman Sweetheart Doubles on Friday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. Entry fee is $15 and features a pot-luck lunch at noon.
Hammer's First Blood
Hammer has come out with an offer to bowlers on their new ball. The new ball from Hammer can be purchased on Feb. 5 and is called First Blood.
If you watched the PBA show a couple of weeks ago, you saw Scott Norton defeat Jason Belmonte 227 to 223 to win the Chameleon Championship with the new ball. The word out is that it gets through the fronts well and with plenty of hook down lane.
