NAMI classes to help with mental illness

The Merced County National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI, will hold a 12-week course on family-to-family education for those with a family member who has a mental illness. The course will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at 480 E. 13th St. For more information, call (209) 381-6844.

Hamburger Night at Livingston VFW

LIVINGSTON -- The VFW will hold its first Hamburger Night of 2013, from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at 1605 Seventh St. Prices range from $2 to $4 per meal and all proceeds support community programs. For more information, call (209) 394-2059.

Habitat for Humanity selling grilled tri-tips

Habitat for Humanity of Merced County will hold a barbecue from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday at G Street and Olive Avenue in the Walgreens parking lot. A whole tri-tip is $20. To preorder, call (209) 722-6101.

Chicken and waffles on menu at breakfast

The first community breakfast, chicken 'n' waffles, will be from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Bethesda Apostolic Faith Church, 1822 Canal St. Tickets are $7.50 each. For more information, call (209) 726-0533.

Rose of Sharon Church Women's Conference

Barbershop singing on Valentine's Day

The Golden Valley Men's Barbershop Chorus will offer Singing Valentines on Feb. 14. The group will deliver a silk rose, a Valentine card, sing a romantic song and take a digital photo of the recipient surrounded by the quartet. The group will make deliveries in the Merced-Atwater area from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Cost is $40. Call (209) 383-3808 to make a reservation.

D Street Homeless Shelter needs help

The D Street Homeless Shelter is in need of food. The cold weather brings in more people, and volunteers serve an evening meal to a group of up to 65. Prepared meals or volunteers who can help cook are needed. There is freezer space available for meals that are prepared in advance. For more information, call (209) 704-4384.
