49ers issue statement on Culliver flap

- The Sports Network

The San Francisco 49ers sought to distance themselves from comments made by cornerback Chris Culliver during Tuesday's media day, issuing a statement on Wednesday.

"The San Francisco 49ers reject the comments that were made yesterday, and have addressed the matter with Chris," the club said in an issued statement. "There is no place for discrimination within our organization at any level. We have and always will proudly support the LGBT community."

Culliver was asked by former Howard Stern sidekick Artie Lange if there were any gay players on the 49ers, to which Culliver reportedly said -- as revealed in the San Francisco Chronicle: "No, we don't got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do ... can't be with that sweet stuff. Nah ... can't be ... in the locker room man."

Those sentiments contradicted an answer given by San Francisco head coach Jim Harbaugh back in November, who said he had "no discrimination in his heart" and that his expectations of a player who was gay would be the same for any other on the team.
