Daniel McLeod: Constitution a foundation

Published: January 30, 2013

GSGContrary to what the courts, lawyers and politicians would have us believe, the Constitution and the Second Amendment are clear. They were written for the common man, simple and direct. "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

Regardless of where you stand on the gun control issue, the correct process to change the law is through constitutional amendment. Neither the president, Congress, nor the courts have the right to unilaterally alter the clear meaning of the Constitution.

Law professors and politicians tells us that the Constitution is a "living" document; flexible to fit the times and needs of the people.

This is untrue. It is a foundational document, holding truths that are self evident, sacrosanct and unyielding regardless of the human condition.

A society built on "flexible" principles, much like a building erected on a moving foundation, cannot last.
