The decathlon features competitions in art, economics, language and literature, mathematics, music, social science and science.
There are also communication tests, including essay writing, delivery of prepared and impromptu speeches, and an oral interview.
High schools participating include Atwater, Bu-hach Colony, Golden Valley, Merced, Gustine, Le Grand, Los Banos and Valley Community School campuses in Merced, Atwater and Los Banos.
Teams compete for awards, scholarships and a chance to represent the county March 14-17 at the State Academic Decathlon in Sacramento.
Sponsorship partners for the decathlon are the Hattie Givens Testamentary Trust, Kemper CPA Group LLP, Educational Employees Credit Union and Merced County Office of Education.
In addition, the Merced Schools Employees Federal Credit Union donates $5,000 to sponsor the Robert Wayne Scholarship Program.
The public is invited to attend the Super Quiz portion of the decathlon at 3:10 p.m., and the awards ceremony at 7 in the Merced College Theater, 3600 M St. in Merced.
