Modesto fans go all out in Niner love

- pguerra@modbee.com

Mike Neuman is just one of many avid 49ers fans in Modesto. The area is home to lots of folks who eagerly await the end of an 18-year drought of Super Bowl appearances for the San Francisco team.

One of them isn't above some shenanigans to support her team.

A couple of years ago, Dinah Henschel went to Elk Grove to baby-sit her niece and baby nephew. Henschel likes the Niners. Her brother is a huge San Diego Chargers fan.

So Henschel outfitted the little girl in 49ers gear, sat her next to a Niners teddy bear, took some photos and then replaced family photos throughout the house with the new ones.

"They didn't think it was funny, but I did," Henschel said. She even used her brother's computer and printer to produce the shots. It didn't take her brother long to notice.

"All of a sudden, I'm getting all these phone calls. It was awesome."

"Awesome" is a word that also could describe a floor in Kelly Cahoon's house, which she painted with the 49er logo, matching much of the décor in her house.

"It's the first time ever painting anything," Cahoon posted on The Bee's Facebook page. "Born a Niner ... ."

Michael Ormonde also likes the Niners theme at home. According to his wife, Jennifer, Michael has a full "man cave" dedicated to the team. He also thought ahead, signing up in November for a vacation day on Super Bowl Sunday "just in case."

Not that they're superstitious, but it's still Christmas at the Ormonde home.

"We also have a lucky 49er Christmas tree up," Jennifer wrote on Facebook. "Still! It won't come down until they lose!"

Mandy DeBoer, a first-grade teacher at Great Valley Academy, parlayed her fanaticism into a ticket to the Big Game. DeBoer appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Friday as a competitor in a contest to find the best 49er fan. She and another winner got tickets to New Orleans to cheer on their respective home teams.
