MODESTO — Some were 49ers fans, others normally root for the Raiders or the Packers, but all of the kids at the Camp Taylor Super Bowl party were Colin Kaepernick fans.

The party at the DoubleTree Hotel in Modesto was one of many events put on for the kids of Camp Taylor, a Salida-based charity for children with heart diseases.

The 49er quarterback from Turlock recently spent a day with some of those kids, including Hannah French.

"It was fun," said the 8-year-old from Fresno, who went swimming with the 49er quarterback.

Hannah has been participating in Camp Taylor activities most of her life, and it's the one place she can feel normal.

"I like to meet friends with special hearts like me," she said.

And Kaepernick has a soft spot for special kids like Hannah. His parents lost two children to heart disease before they adopted him. He not only has donated his time to Camp Taylor but also proceeds from an organization that sold a bracelet with his name on it.

Some of the older kids, such as 13-year-old Natalia Martinez, didn't get to meet him during his most recent visit, but her eyes widened at the prospect.

Camp Taylor founder Kimberlie Gamino said the charity has a "long-term continued relationship" with Kaepernick, so more children will get to meet him soon.

Natalia's mother, Alisa Rodriguez, said four open-heart surgeries left her daughter timid and self-conscious about her scars and a heart monitor she on occasion has had to wear to school.

But Camp Taylor has helped Natalia come out of her shell, Rodriguez said. From what she heard from other parents, a visit from Kaepernick would be another amazing gift from the charity.

"When he visited, they didn't ask about his tattoos and he didn't ask about their scars," she said.
