Winton home fire injures one

WINTON -- A house fire over the weekend in Winton injured one person and killed four dogs, Cal Fire reported Monday.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection firefighters responded to the 7100 block of Center Street at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Battalion Chief Gabriel Santos.

The fire began in the home's carport and traveled to the interior of the residence.

The heat from the blaze caused the exterior of an adjacent home to catch fire, Santos said. The fire also brought down power lines in the area, prompting PG&E personnel to respond.

Santos said the victim, a 45-year-old woman, burned her hand while trying to rescue one of the dogs from the fire. Firefighters contained the fire within 30 minutes.

The blaze caused moderate damage, estimated about $80,000, to the home. The adjacent home sustained minor damage.

Santos said six people were displaced from the home where the fire started, and four were displaced from the adjacent home. The Red Cross responded, providing housing assistance for those affected, Santos said.

Twelve firefighters, five engines, a water tender, a rescue vehicle and a battalion chief responded.
