WILMOT: Don't buy threats

Raising taxes seems to be popular with our state and local governments. Rarely does it ever occur to them that slapping on more taxes hurts low- and medium-income families. Here in Atwater, City Hall wants you to believe that the coming, massive utility fee increases are not enough to satisfy their never-ending quest for more money. Never mind that some of those fees are going to increase fourfold. Now they are handing residents a proverbial gun to shoot themselves in the foot with -- a vote to increase the sales tax by $1.8 million a year. It comes with the threat that police services will suffer without it.

Don't you believe it!

With City Hall flush with an additional million plus dollars, it will be a fat city all over again.

GARY WILMOT
