A 43-year-old female pedestrian was killed Friday morning after being struck by several cars on southbound Highway 99 near Chowchilla, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The name of the victim hasn't been released by the Madera County coroner, pending notification of her family or next of kin.
The pedestrian was walking around 6 a.m. on the right shoulder of Highway 99, south of Avenue 24. Meanwhile, 24-year-old Brian Fuentes of Chowchilla was driving a 2001 Saturn southbound at about 60 mph in the fast lane, according to the CHP.
The pedestrian tried to cross the freeway, walking east across the southbound lanes. Fuentes saw the pedestrian running with a gas can directly ahead of his vehicle. Before he was able to stop, the front of Fuentes car struck the pedestrian.
The woman was ejected onto the roadway, where she was struck by two more cars. The pedestrian sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
All of the drivers involved in the incident immediately pulled over onto the shoulder after the incident, according to the CHP.
