Pedestrian killed on southbound Highway 99 identified

A 43-year-old pedestrian from Madera who was killed Friday morning after trying to cross the southbound lanes of Highway 99 has been identified as Vitalina Jimenez, according to the Madera County Coroner’s Office.

The CHP said Jimenez was walking on the right shoulder of Highway 99, south of Avenue 24, about 6 a.m. She then tried to run across the freeway, officers said, heading east across the southbound lanes.

Jimenez was subsequently struck by three cars on the highway. All of the drivers involved in the incident immediately pulled over onto the shoulder, according to the CHP.

Jimenez was pronounced dead at the scene.
