Paul Deckers: Nickel-and-dimed over recycling

Recently I noticed a recycling fee for buying latex house paint. The purpose of the fee is to promote recycling and proper disposal of paint.

The proper disposal process of latex paint is to let it dry and dispose of it in normal trash collection. No kidding, that's all it takes. Hardly do we need a recycling fee added to paint for this reason.

What is additionally disturbing is that the recycling fee is taxable. No matter how you word it, that is a tax upon a tax. It's just not right.

Then I notice there is an additional 1 percent tax on wood products. Then there is the electronic waste recycling fee and who knows how many other fees and taxes are out there or on their way.

Come on, guys, what are you doing to us? You are really making it painful to live in California. The trend to tax upper-income earners seems to have backfired as they are leaving the state in record numbers. In order to keep up with the loss of revenue, now everyone is left to pick up the burden of an overinflated bureaucracy. When is help on its way?
