Aki Chambers scored a career-high 36 points and Martin Harris poured in 23 as the UC Merced men's basketball team sent a statement to the rest of the California Pacific Conference entering the conference tournament with a convincing 79-67 victory over regular-season champion William Jessup on Saturday night at Hostetler Court.
The Golden Bobcats (9-20, 7-3 Cal Pac) enter the tournament as the third seed and will play host to Pacific Union College on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
Columbia 72, Merced College 64
SONORA -- Gurpreet Sangha (game-high 22 points) and David Sandoval (14) combined for seven of the Blue Devils' nine 3-pointers, but it wasn't enough in a road loss to Columbia.
James Waters chipped in 13 points for MC (1-20, 1-9 Central Valley Conference).
BASEBALL
Cypress 6, Merced College 0
CYPRESS -- Mike Nelson allowed just two earned runs in four complete innings, but got no run support. The Blue Devils (3-5) could only scratch out three hits, getting shut out by Cypress to close out a tough 0-3 road trip down South.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Merced College 68, Porterville 64
PORTERVILLE -- Sonji Green's double-double (21 points, 16 rebounds) paced the Lady Devils in a tough road win.
Jasmin Barnett added 12 points and Kelsey Lemasney chipped in 11 for MC (16-10, 8-2 CVC).
William Jessup 61, UC Merced 31
Leticia Oceguera led the Bobcats with 13 points and three assists, but UCM, with guards Shelby Howard and Maya Campo not in the lineup, lacked the firepower to stay with William Jessup.
Adrienne Carmona finished with nine points and seven rebounds in the loss.
