Women's 500 club championship Sunday at Bellevue

This Sunday the Merced/Atwater Women's 500 Club will be hosting their handicap singles Club Championship tournament at Bellevue Bowl at 1:30 p.m. It is open to all local 500 club members.

Entries close Thursday. The entry fee is $22 and forms are available at Bellevue Bowl. You will be rolling three games of regulation bowling, using your 2012 book average.

The tournament is certified by USBC.

Bowl for a Cure

February is Bowl for a Cure Month in which local associations hold different fund-raisers during the month for this worth while cause. USBC is continuing its support for the Susan G. Komen Beast Cancer Foundation. Many centers in the valley will have mini-tournaments to strike out cancer.

League highlights

Rolling his first career 700 series was Alex Nunes with a high game of 278 for 718 set. ... Barbara Bustos rolling a 542. ... Jeremy Hurd had a fine 298 with a 704 set. ... David Jarrad a 230 with a 149 average. ... Kay Zimmerman a 219 with a 153 average.

Revised forms

Get your team and your doubles partner ready for next month's big event. New entry forms for the 67th Annual City Championships sponsored by our local Merced County USBC Association are now out at Bellevue Bowl. The Open division is a four member team consisting of any combination of men and women; a four person women's team is also offered by the association.

The mini tournament begins March 2 at 11 a.m. with the first team event. It is followed by a set of doubles and singles at 2:30 p.m. On March 3, the events and times are reversed. The lanes will be oiled between squads on both day. Entry is only $20 per event and $10 for all-events, handicap or scratch. The winners of each event will be the dinner guests of the association at the annual Hall of Fame dinner on April 13.

Black Oak tournament

The 8th Annual Senior no-tap tournament has the 10 a.m. squad on March 1 with openings; the 1:30 p.m. squad as a few openings. There is a separate prize list for men and women.

High game pots are paid out after every game. This year when you check in you will receive a $10 free-play coupon to be used upstairs in the casino. Entry fee is only $15, and that includes your high-game pot.

Coffee, cookies, and popcorn are served during the day for the bowlers. Call Sandy Taylor, tournament director to reserve a spot at (209) 928-9437. I have a group going up for the 1:30 p.m. squad; if you're interested call me at (209) 777-1111.

Do you remember when?

In 1976 Con Hemmesch took the City Championship singles event with a 782. ... Floyd Armstrong rolled a 300 game. ... Bill Piacentini had a 730 series. ... Gilbert Acosta with a 176 average. ... Jim Dochety a 172 average. ... And Danny Barnes rolled a 149 average.

Sad note

Mark Bourdase, 61, of Clovis passed away last Saturday due to injures he suffered during a hit-and-run accident near Fresno State on Feb. 8. Bourdase was a member of the San Joaquin Bowling Club and the Silver Foxes Bowling Club. He bowled at Castle Lanes and Bellevue Bowl when the club's hosted their tournaments.

A regular bowler of the Peach Classic singles at McHenry Bowl and the West PBA regionals at Yosemite Lanes, Bourdase will be missed by all that knew him. I bowled with him at Cedar Lanes a year ago in the Silver Foxes, a wild and crazy guy -- and a great competitor.

Don Surdich can be reached at (209) 777-1111 or via e-mail at desurdich@aol.com.
