MERCED -- The Merced Shakespearefest will kick off its 12th season with a production of "Hamlet," which opens in downtown Merced today and runs through March 3.
The Merced Shakespearefest, which began in 2002, is the only free outdoor Shakespeare festival in Merced County.
Since it began, the nonprofit group has staged productions of classic Shakespeare comedies and tragedies, including "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Romeo and Juliet," and "Much Ado About Nothing."
"Hamlet" plays at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays at the Merced Multicultural Arts Center, 645 W. Main St. in Merced. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

The Merced Shakespearefest will finish its 12th season in Applegate Park in September with the Shakespeare comedy, "As You Like it."
