SNELLING -- The unofficial kickoff to Merced County cycling season gets under way today with the 28th annual Snelling Road Race.
It's part of a two-day cycling event with the 27th Original Merced Criterium taking place Sunday around Courthouse Park.
The local races will help whet the appetites of the community and local riders for next week's four-day Merco Cycling Classic.
The Snelling Road Race is an 11.7-mile loop around the rolling hills and dirt roads northwest of Snelling. The action gets under way at Henderson Park at 8:10 a.m.
The Merced Criterium will be a ninth of a mile loop from 21st Street to Main Street and going up and down M and N streets. It's set to run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Both races will include men's, women's, masters and juniors participants from Category 1 to Category 5 skill sets.
