— Merced police are investigating a shooting in the 600 block of West Sixth Street about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, according to Sgt. Alan Ward.

A 39-year-old Merced man suffered two gunshot wounds -- one to the hand and one to the upper torso, Ward said.

The victim's injuries were not considered life-threatening, but he was flown to a Modesto-area hospital, authorities said.

Details are pending and officers are questioning family members, whom they say have not been cooperative.

Officers believe the shooting took place in the victim's apartment, but the assailant fled before police arrived.
