This is it: City Championship rolls out Saturday

Get your team and your doubles partner ready for this weekend, as the 67th Annual City Championships, sponsored by our local Merced County USBC Association, kicks off at Bellevue Bowl.

The Open division is for four- member teams consisting of any combination or men and women; a women's four-member team is offered by the association. The mini tourney starts this Saturday at 11 a.m. with the first team event. It is followed by a set of doubles and singles at 2:30 p.m.

On Sunday, the events and times are reversed. The lanes will be oiled between squads. You can sign-up for an event 15 prior to the scheduled time. Entry is only $20 per event and $10 for all-events, handicap or scratch. The tournament is only one weekend this year, so don't miss this one.

Seniors at Black Oak

The 8th Annual Senior No-Tap tournament is set for Friday at Black Oak Lanes with a opening squad at 10 a.m. and a 1:30 p.m. squad. The early squad has room for bowlers, the last squad has only five spots open.

If you are a walk-in for the 10 a.m. squad, you must check-in by 9:30 a.m. High-game pots are paid out after every game for men and women. When you check-in for your squad, you will receive a $10 free-play coupon to be used upstairs in the casino.

Entry fee is only $15, and that includes your high game pot. You can call Sandy Taylor, tournament director to reserve a spot at (209) 928-9437.

Winners are paid one out of five and checks will be mailed out after the winners of all the three squads are combined and determined for men and women.

Delta 500 results

The Merced/Atwater 500 Club was well represented at the recent Delta Women's 500 Club tournament in Stockton. The following members picked up some cash: In the A division it was Juli Egleston taking first for $80, in the B division it was Rikki Cascia in third for $50, Phyllis Wallbaum in eighth for $25 and in the C division it was Gayle Sagin in fifth for $30. Nice bowling, gals.

League spotlights

Dawn Fernandez lit up the lanes in the Classic as she rolled games of 250, pounded the pocket for a 280 -- then eased up for a 226 and a super 756. ... Dave Vant picked up the 3-7-10 split. ... Greg Johnson fires a 254 game with a 151 average.

500 Club championship

The Merced/Atwater Women's 500 Club championships held last Sunday at Bellevue Bowl was decided by one pin as Janie Schropp edged out Rikki Cascia, 672 to 671, for the club championship win.

Schropp receives a check for $69 and her name engraved on the club plaque. Cascia receives a check for $58. Taking a third place finish was Charli McMillian (648) for $49, fourth had Kim Heller with (646) for $43, and there was a tie for fifth place between Dee Bayer and Gayle Sagin both with (631) for $34 each.

High game for the tournament was rolled by Heller with a 202. Kristin Weimer, club secretary said there was a large turnout for the Club Championship on Sunday. The club's next event will be the Friendship Doubles to be held on April 28.

USBC championships

The USBC Open is being held this year in Reno for both men and women. The deadline for entering the tournaments is Friday.

There are many major changes to the Open this year. One is that it will feature two lane conditions, one oil pattern for the team and another for doubles and singles. A new daily schedule will be introduced at the 2013 events to all the lanes to be oiled before every squad.

To keep the pace of play steady, all six games of doubles and singles will be contested on the same pair of lanes. In the past, bowlers would bowl doubles then flip to an adjacent pair for singles. The Open will be held at the National Bowling Stadium and the Women's Open at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center which is under going a major renovation for the tournament.
