Police: Some witnesses uncooperative in Los Banos killing

- cpride@losbanosenterprise.com

LOS BANOS -- An unidentified man was killed in what police say was a gang-related shooting Monday night, marking Los Banos' first homicide of the year, police reported Tuesday.

The Merced County coroner's office has not released the name of the homicide victim.

The Los Banos Police Department received a report of shots fired at a residence on the 800 block of La Mesa Lane at 9:09 p.m.

Police said that when they arrived on the scene, they discovered four men in the garage suffering from gunshot wounds. One of them was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other three victims, who are all 20 years old, were shot in the legs. Police said a bullet also struck one of the victims in the arm.

The three wounded men were airlifted to Modesto-area hospitals and are listed in stable condition, police said.

Witnesses reported seeing a male in dark-colored clothing running from the area after the shooting, police said. However, officers said, not everyone has been forthcoming about the incident.

"Some of the witnesses have been uncooperative as we investigate this case," Cmdr. Ray Reyna Jr. said. "At this point we do believe this incident is gang related."

Police said they have not identified a suspect at this time.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Eduardo Solis at (209) 827-7070, ext. 137.
