Police: Man sought after woman grabbed

Published: March 5, 2013

— Merced police are looking for a man wanted for sexually battery after he grabbed a woman Monday night in a parking lot off G Street outside a business.

Police responded to the scene at 7:50 p.m. in the 2900 block of North G Street. The woman reported she was walking to her car after leaving the business when the incident occurred, according to Lt. Bimley West.

While the woman was walking to her car, a Latino man drove up in a 2000 gold Chevy Silverado. The man spoke to the woman, engaging in small talk with her, West said.

When the woman tried to walk away, however, West said the man got out of his vehicle and grabbed her, as if he was going to hug her, and then touched her inappropriately. The man then got back into his vehicle and fled the scene, and the woman notified law enforcement.

West said the victim didn't know the man, and the crime is considered sexual battery.

The suspect is between 25 and 28 years old, with black hair and brown eyes, and about 5 feet 10 inches tall, 180 pounds.

Police are asking witnesses or anyone with information about the case to call (209) 385-4702 or the department's automated tipline at (209) 385-4725. Residents can text a tip to TIP411 (847411) using "comvip" as the first word in the text message. Tips are kept confidential, and you can remain anonymous.
