Around Town: PFLAG meeting

The Rev. Sr. Elena Kelly, co-founder of Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays Stockton and co-chapter leader of Marriage Equality San Joaquin, will speak at the Merced PFLAG meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church of Merced, 899 Yosemite Park Way.

37th annual run

HORNITOS -- The Merced Running Club will host the 37th annual Indian Gulch-Hornitos 2-mile, 5-mile and 10-mile runs with check-in at

7:15 a.m. Saturday. The runs start at 8:30 a.m. Walkers are only allowed in the 2- and 5-mile runs. Each runner will receive a gift. Plaques will be given to the first male and female of each race, with medals three-deep in age groups. Breakfast is at Stag Hall. The proceeds benefit the UC Merced Cross Country Team. Free nursery seminar

Merced Gardens and Nursery will host a free seminar on California native drought tolerant plants at 1 p.m. Saturday at 1007 Tahoe St. The guest speaker will be Taylor Lewis. Refreshment will be served and it will be held in the outdoor event tent; please dress accordingly. Call (209) 384-0513.

Uniformed services

ATWATER -- The National Association for Uniformed Services, H. Wayne Hein, Chapter 18, will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Atwater Veteran's Memorial Building, 1390 Broadway. The speaker will be Lori Flanders, public affairs officer for the Merced County Association of Governments. Call (209) 358-4834.

CASA fund-raiser

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Merced County will hold their annual fund-raiser with a social hour at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. March 22 at the Merced Fairgrounds Pavilion, 900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Tickets are $50 per person. The event includes a steak and shrimp dinner, live and silent auctions, and music by Crystal Syphon. Proceeds will be used to recruit and train more advocates so every foster child will have a CASA volunteer. Call (209) 722-2272.

Maternity outreach

JMJ Maternity Homes, a faith-based nonprofit agency, provides homeless pregnant women with shelter, resources and support services in a nurturing Christian environment. The maternity program and residential program provide shelter and support services to facilitate prenatal and post-partum health, counseling, case management, food, clothing and more.
