Shame on you, Sun-Star. Please do not confuse death benefits with pension reform, as you did in the Perspective column, "Perez's death benefits bill still too costly.” Firefighters and police put their lives on the line to protect our own community members.
As you will soon find out when the study on firefighter-related cancer is released next year, today's homes have many more plastics than we ever have had before. When plastics burn, they create cancer-causing smoke. Even with all of the safety efforts firefighters take, we are still seeing an alarming rate of cancer, and will continue to as more firefighters grow older and plastics continue to be used in manufacturing. Please remember that cancer takes time to develop, often after retirement.
If someone is going to routinely put their life on the line for all of us, I believe that the least we can do is provide their families with proper death benefits.This is not an area we should be pinching our state budget.
