Art Browner: Why low turnout for Measure H?

There are approximately 11,000 registered voters in the city of Atwater. Why did the vast majority not go to the polling places? Was it because they did not know the polls were open, or was it because they do not care?

The right to vote is one of the most important rights that we as Americans possess, and when we do not exercise that right we are telling the politicians that the majority of the population could care less about the decisions that are made; therefore, they only need to pacify the minority. The loss of liberties can be based on the fact that we do not take part in the process. After all, ours is a participator system, be it a republic or democracy.

The problem is not unique to Atwater, it is the state as a whole and Merced County in general. It is indeed a sad commentary.
