JENSEN: Media's focus on race spreads prejudice

March 25, 2013

I think that most everyone is well aware that there are a lot of narrow-minded individuals in this world; but, I am somewhat at a loss as to why media seems to propagate such bigotry or prejudice. For example, in Saturday's Sun-Star newspaper, on Page A3, there was an article concerning Rep. Marcia Fudge. After reading the article, I could not help but wonder: "Since when is the color of one’s skin a prerequisite for anything."

Then again, in Monday's Sun-Star newspaper, on Page A3, there was an article concerning the new pope and who is Latino. After reading this second article, I could not help but wonder: "What difference does it make?"

In my own opinion, the only item that should matter is the person's ability to fulfill the mission or the task the person has been asked to accomplish.
