I read with interest Susan Eva Porter's column about overuse of the term "bully." Her premise was that kids haven't changed that much.
They have changed as society has changed. Only a few years ago a lockdown was something about a riot in prison. More and more aggressive behavior is evident in today's society. The NFL has had to create rules to deal with overly aggressive behavior. Gangs have become the norm. A few years ago kids could wear any color or any cap they wished. Today we ban certain colors and all hats because of gangs. Children are raised much differently today than a few years ago. They are encouraged to "sow their wild oats" while they are underage so it will not be on their permanent record.
Bullying is a problem in schools. The fact is that children are meaner, nastier and especially more aggressive than in past generations.
Reading discipline reports indicates very aggressive bullying as the cause for many of the fights.
What is the answer? A society that does not put up with bullying.
Protect the ones who need protection.
