A 50-year-old Merced man was airlifted to a Modesto hospital with severe injuries Thursday morning after being stabbed in the lower back, police reported Friday.

The incident happened in the 3200 block of Meadows Avenue about 2:10 a.m., according to Sgt. Rodney Court.

Police arrived in the area after receiving reports of a stabbing, but couldn't locate a victim at first, Court said.

After speaking to a witness, officers found the victim, who suffered a deep laceration to his lower back, near his spine.

According to Court, the victim was uncooperative and only would tell officers that he'd been stabbed by a Latino man after an argument.

The victim initially refused medical care, but agreed to be transported to a Merced hospital because of significant blood loss. He later was flown to a Modesto trauma center.

Officers were unable to locate other witnesses or evidence.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call (209) 385-6913, (209) 385-4702 or the department's automated tip line at (209) 385-4725. Tips can be sent via text message to TIP411 (847411). Include "COMVIP" in the text message.
