Engelina Smith: Unjust situation

April 1, 2013

The article about same-sex military couples, regarding Sgt. Johnson, is heartbreaking. Her "marriage" was not recognized, and therefore she could not be notified as next of kin.

For those who still condemn same-sex marriage, or who don't want the couples involved to have the same guaranteed rights and benefits as heterosexual couples, please take a look at the birth announcements in the Merced Sun-Star.

Often the majority of the births are not of married couples, but instead of couples who live together.

How is it then justified to not grant the same rights and benefits to those couples who desperately want to commit to a legal relationship (marriage), but cannot?
