An art competition will give one lucky winner the opportunity to have his or her artwork displayed in the state Capitol building for more than a year.
The competition, which is open to Merced County residents, is sponsored by Sen. Anthony Cannella, R-Ceres.
The winning piece of contemporary art will be selected by Cannella based on how well it represents his district. "I am proud to represent such a rich and diverse district and I am excited to be able to showcase the talent of the district in the state Capitol," Cannella said in a statement.
In addition to having the winning piece displayed in the Capitol, the artist will receive special recognition from the Senate.
Officials said submissions must be original artwork by a resident of the 12th Senate District.
Oil paintings, works on paper, weavings, wall hangings and sculpture are acceptable, but the piece cannot be larger than 3-by-5 feet, they said.
A biography of the artist must accompany the submission, and the artist must agree to loan the art to the exhibit for about 18 months. The planned schedule for the exhibit is May 2013 to September 2014, officials said.
The deadline for submission is April 25.
Artwork can be submitted by email or through postal mail to one of the district offices, which are at 1640 N St., Suite 210, in Merced, 918 15th St. in Modesto, or 369 Main St., Suite 208, in Salinas.
Officials said the artwork should be marked "SD 12 Art Competition" to be routed to the appropriate person.
Email submissions can be sent to District Director Steven Nascimento at firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line "SD 12 Art Competition."
