Around Town: Zumba fitness class

Merced Adult School will hold a Zumba class from 5:50 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at 50 E. 20th St., in the Merced Adult School cafeteria. The class will start tomorrow and run through June 27. The cost is $50. Call (209) 777-8442.

National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month. Residents will share their favorite poems as part of the Favorite Poem Project, from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Gracey Room at the Merced County Library, 2100 O St. For more information, visit www.favoritepoem.org.

Cleanup Day

The annual Community Cleanup Day will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Participants will meet at the playground next to Golden Valley Health Centers. Gloves, trash bags, water and a light snack will be provided. Call (209) 385-5490 for more information.

Genealogical Society

The Merced County Genealogical Society will meet at noon April 20 at the Merced County Library, 2100 O St. Speaker Richard Rands' topic is Italian ancestors. Society meetings are open to all. No membership is required.

Church blood drive

Yosemite Church of Merced will hold a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 21 at 2230 E. Yosemite Ave. Donors should eat a good meal and drink plenty of water prior to donating. Give a pint and receive a free T-shirt. Call (209) 631-5528.

Bike ride for MS

HORNITOS -- The Multiple Sclerosis Society will hold a 10-mile bike ride April 21 at the corner of Indian Gulch Road and Highway 140 in Catheys Valley. Registration is at 8:30 a.m., and the ride starts at 10. The ride ends in Hornitos Park with a barbecue and awards. All proceeds will go to the MS Society. Call (209) 376-2320.

Animal shelter helpers

New Beginnings Merced, a nonprofit group dedicated to saving shelter animals and finding them new homes, needs volunteers to help. Especially needed are people who can foster kittens, or mother dogs and their puppies for a short time. Also needed are people to help take photos of shelter animals or to help transport animals to rescue organizations. No personal vehicles are needed for transportation. Call (209) 769-2122.
