The 36-year-old half-sister of a man wanted in an Oregon homicide was arrested Sunday, accused of providing a safe haven for the suspect.
Rebecca Paz was taken into custody after Dos Palos police confirmed that her brother, Leland Thomas Nicholson Jr., 27, had arrived at her home after the homicide.
Although Dos Palos police searched Paz's home, Nicholson wasn't found. Police believe Paz provided Nicholson with food and shelter while he was on the run. "There is no doubt that Leland Nicholson Jr. was at the residence of Paz. However, his current whereabouts are still unknown," Dos Palos Police Chief Barry Mann said in a statement.
Police believe Nicholson may have plans to travel to Mexico. Nicholson is believed to have received money from his brother, Timothy Nicholson, while in Dos Palos, although that money would have lasted only a few days.
"We will continue our efforts until we can confirm that Nicholson is no longer in the Dos Palos area and no longer poses a threat to our local citizens," Mann said.
Mann urged Nicholson to turn himself in, saying Dos Palos police would provide a safe way for him to surrender to Oregon authorities.
Nicholson, who goes by the nickname "Tom," is wanted by law enforcement in Klamath County, Ore., in connection with the killing of Terry Entriken, 28. Police there say he tried to kill Vanessa Alexander, 36. Entriken was shot in the back of the head, according to the Herald and News newspaper in Klamath Falls, Ore. Police in that area are trying to determine a motive.
Nicholson has family in Merced, Fresno and Dos Palos, Mann said.
Nicholson is described as a white man, 6 feet 2 inches tall and 240 pounds with short, reddish-brown hair and green eyes. He has a tattoo reading "Nikki" on the right side of his neck and may have other tattoos, police said. His last known address was 4605 Denver Ave., Klamath Falls.
He is considered armed and dangerous, Mann said. Anyone with information on Nicholson's whereabouts is asked to call the Dos Palos Police Department at (209) 392-2176. Tips can be sent via email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
