Chipotle has expanded its test-marketing of a vegetarian menu item called "Sofritas" to the Sacramento region.
A company spokesman said today that Sofritas sales began at Chipotle restaurants beginning Monday in all of Northern California. Sofritas were first test-marketed beginning in February at seven Bay area Chipotle fast food restaurants.
They are made with shredded tofu with chipotle chiles, roasted poblanos and spices. The tofu is from Oakland's Hodo Soy Beanery, which supplies tofu to restaurants such as San Francisco's The Slanted Door.
"It is really conceived with vegetarians and vegans in mind, but it's so delicious that we believe it will have a broad appeal on taste alone," said Chipotle's founder Steve Ellis in a press release.
Sofritas will be available in burritos, tacos, burrito bowls and salads. Customers can add the usual ingredients available at Chipotle: rice, beans, salsas, guacamole, cheese and sour cream.
Chipotle earlier tested another vegetarian menu item, called Garden Blend, but the company was not happy with customer response so Sofritas was developed.
