A Gilroy police officer is on leave after a misdemeanor charge was filed against him in Merced County Superior Court on Wednesday.

Gilroy police officer Noel Lemus was placed on leave after city officials there learned that the Merced County district attorney's office had filed charges against Lemus for an off-duty incident that happened last month in Merced County, according to a Gilroy Police Department press release.

Lemus was charged with resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer. Gilroy officials said they are conducting their own investigation but released no further information, citing the Public Safety Officers Bill of Rights.
