Around Town: Free BMX Ride Nights

ATWATER -- Free BMX Ride Nights start today and run through October. They will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the first and third Monday of each month at Veterans Park. Youth ages 6 to 17 are invited. Bikes and helmets are available at no charge. Sign-ups will be held at the track today.

Baby hair accessories

Merced College Community Services will hold a class on baby hair accessories starting Tuesday and continuing through May 14. The class will be held on Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at 630 W. 19th St. Call (209) 384-6224.

Read and succeed

A volunteer tutor orientation will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Los Banos library, 1312 Seventh St.; at 6 p.m. April 22 at the Merced Main Library, 2100 O St.; and from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. April 27 at the Merced library. RSVP required. Call (209) 385-7391.

National Library Week

LIVINGSTON -- National Library Week will be celebrated with a special story time and party at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the library, 1212 Main St. Police Chief Ruben Chavez will read a story, and there will be crafts, prizes and goodies. Seating is limited to 20. Call (209) 394-7330.

Community blood drive

Earth Day celebration

The city of Merced will hold an Earth Day celebration at 5:15 p.m. Thursday at the civic center, 678 W. 18th St., for children ages 3 to 6. Children will learn about the importance of Earth Day while planting flowers, decorating flower pots and playing games. Cost is $7 a person and preregistration is required. Camp fund-raiser

Peggy Heller School's sixth-grade class will have a fund-raiser from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot, 201 Lakeview Drive. Cost will be $10 per plate for pulled pork on a roll, beans and coleslaw from Uncle Buck's.

Annual enchilada sale

Club Mercedes will have its annual enchilada sale from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the club, Ninth and M streets. Ground beef enchiladas are $13 a dozen, with beans and rice available for an extra $5 per container. Take-out orders only. Sales will be limited, so advance tickets are requested.
