MERCED — A family-friendly art event that showcases local artists, music and entertainment is about to take over the streets of downtown Merced.
Art Hop, which started five years ago, will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday. The event will feature the work of 50 to 300 artists, organizers said.
Many downtown businesses participate in the Art Hop, including local business owner and co-founder Kevin Hammon.
Hammon said it costs about $3,000 to put on each Art Hop. Organizers used grants and sponsorships to put on the event when it first was launched.
Last month, organizers held a rummage sale to benefit the Art Hop, raising more than $1,000. Hammon said he plans to hold more rummage sales in the future to keep the event going.
The Art Hop is one of the city's busiest nights downtown, with an average of about 2,500 people showing up to experience it, Hammon said.
The Art Hop is held four times a year, in January, April, July and October in downtown Merced on the third Saturday of the month.
