Two Planada residents received major injuries Friday after a two-vehicle crash on Avenue 26 at Santa Fe Road in Madera County, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The incident happened about 2:30 p.m. According to the CHP, Randall Coelho, 58, of Los Banos was traveling east on Avenue 26 in a Chevy Silverado, approaching the intersection with Santa Fe Road.

Meanwhile, Ramon Gallardo, 54, was driving a 1998 Toyota Tacoma north on Santa Fe Road toward the Avenue 26 intersection. Inside Gallardo's car was his passenger, Jesus Gutierrez, 66, of Planada. At the intersection, there are stop signs on Santa Fe Road only.

For unknown reasons, Gallardo failed to yield to Coelho, and attempted to cross the intersection directly in front of him, the CHP said.

Coelho applied his brakes but couldn't avoid a collision with the Tacoma, officials said. The front passenger side of Coelho's vehicle crashed into the driver's side of the Tacoma.

The impact forced both vehicles off the roadway and onto the north shoulder of Avenue 26, east of the intersection. Gallardo and Gutierrez were flown to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. Coelho sustained minor injuries, according to the CHP.

Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash, officials said.
