ERIC HAMM: It's up to us to make Merced better

April 24, 2013

Merced. It's where I grew up, and where I've chosen to raise my family. It's where I work, worship, and do life. Growing up, we used to refer to it as "MerDead" and couldn't wait to get out. I got out, and came back. I love Merced!

Certainly, it has its drawbacks. And it has its detractors. For our community to be vibrant, we have to be willing to roll up our sleeves from time to time to pitch in. The old saying you reap what you sow, comes to mind ... you get out what you put in.

If you agree, I urge you to check out Love Merced. Well over 1,000 volunteers showed up to the two events last year to serve in our community. They volunteered to help clean up our parks and bike paths, even neighborhoods and schools. They provided encouragement at local retirement homes and wrote letters to our troops. And those were just a few of the options!

We will be at it again this Saturday. A complete list of projects and more information can be found at

Love Merced will kick off at 9 a.m. at Applegate Park. Most of the projects will be completed by noon. You can sign up for a project at Many of the projects are kid friendly and offer an opportunity to instill a sense of obligation to serve one's community in your children. My entire family will be there and we hope to see you there, too!

Merced Sun-Star is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
