Man shot on Merced bike path recovering

— A 22-year-old man is expected to survive after being shot earlier this week while riding the Fahrens Park bike path near R Street and Buena Vista Drive, police reported Thursday.

No suspects have been arrested, according to Lt. Bimley West.

Officers responded at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday after receiving reports of shots fired.

They searched the area and found the victim near San Rafael Court. The victim had a gunshot wound to his back and was taken to a Modesto hospital for treatment, police said.

The victim reported to police that he was riding his bicycle on the path when an unidentified man approached him and demanded his bicycle.

The victim rode away from the assailant, who then fired. The victim was struck in the back but was able to ride to San Rafael Court.

Police searched the area for the shooter, but didn't find him.

No description of the shooter is available.
