LIVINGSTON — Police were investigating Thursday a shooting that killed a 25-year-old man and wounded his 18-year-old brother. The dead man has been identified by police as Jose Sandoval of Livingston. The shooter remains at large.
The incident was reported just before 8 p.m. Thursday in the 1300 block of E Street. Police say a car carrying three males and a female approached the brothers.
When the car stopped, police said, the occupants got out and assaulted the victims. As the fight continued, one of the people from the car opened fire on the brothers.
About seven rounds were fired by the gunman, police said. Sandoval died from his wounds and his brother, who sustained two bullet wounds to the abdomen, was taken to a local hospital, Lt. Chris Soria said.
The teenager is expected to recover.
The motive remains under investigation, but police said a fight was reported about 6 p.m. in the 700 block of First Street.
Police believe Sandoval may have been involved in the fight, and that incident may have led to the shooting. Officers said the shooter's car is described as a newer model, gray Nissan with chrome rims.
Officers initially reported the incident as a drive-by shooting, but after further investigation determined the gunman got out of the car before opening fire.
It's the first homicide reported in Livingston this year, and the ninth reported in Merced County.
Livingston police are asking anyone with information about this incident to call Sgt. Ray Fong at (209) 394-7916. Tips are kept confidential and callers can remain anonymous.
