Merced College's Greene finishes strong at state meet

— Connor Greene closed the 2013 CCCAA Swimming & Diving State Championships and his Merced College career with one final stellar swim.The sophomore finished second for the second straight day, just getting outpaced by Modesto Junior College's Tim Richard in the 200 breaststroke on Saturday.

Luke Baum finished fourth in the race as the Blue Devils turned in one of their best performances of the entire meet.

Golden West won the state titles for both men and women, while the MC men placed 13th in the 33-team field.

Track & field

Samira Foy, Loryn King, Mariah Daniel and Edith Hernandez combined to win the 4x400-meter relay at the Central Valley Conference Track & Field Championships.

It was the start of a nice day at Veterans Stadium for Daniel, who placed second in the 200-meter dash and third in the 100.

Bethany Moore placed second in the discus for the Blue Devils and third in the shot put and hammer throw.

Devon Marshall had the best showing for the MC men, placing second in the long jump.


For the third time in four years, the Merced College baseball team will be heading to Quincy for the playoffs.

The NorCal first-round regionals were announced on Sunday and No. 10 MC (22-14) will travel to No. 7 Feather River (24-12) for a best-of-three series beginning Friday. The tentative schedule has the Blue Devils playing at 2 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday. Game 3 would follow that if necessary.

Hall of Fame

Seats remain available for the inaugural Merced College Hall of Fame dinner this Saturday night at the entrance to Stadium '76.

The inaugural class will have 11 inductees — five coaches and six athletes. The ceremony will run from 6-9 p.m. and includes dinner. Tickets can be purchased for $40 per person or $400 for a table. For more information contact athletic director Steve Cassady at (209) 658-1659.
